The Charrette is a school-wide event that I initiated in 2009. We have them on and off, always in the beginning of the Spring Semester. It is a way to revive everyone in the cold months of January, and for a week and 1/2, come together under 1 common theme. To see the variety of solutions from the students is exhilarating. The stranger the solutions the better. Students are not graded, but that is the beauty. They are wiling to take risks and just have fun. A kick-off event is held where we interact with all the projects. Many people have come through the doors of the building during the kick-off. One of the best comments I received was someone asking, “Do you have this Carnival every Friday afternoon?” Themes have included: Flight, Two/Too, Blue, Map, Rogue, Nerve, and Monster. I highly recommend doing these. They build community and shake up the normal semester. They can also be approached as a short workshop. If you are interested in having a workshop, please contact me.
