Experimental Type

Description

Class + Workshop

A few years ago, Cassie Hester came to do a workshop at UT, where she had students experimenting with type and silicone molds. This, and her presentation, inspired me to develop an experimental type class of my own. Thanks Cassie! So, in this class, students are given a variety of prompts every two weeks. These range from a simple one-word material like “clay” to the name of a scientist. The goal is to do something that is original and surprises or delights the class. Students keep a process book in which they record their questions, research, influences and ideas for how this experiment might be improved or used. The point at which they grow (around 3 weeks into the class) is when they stop looking at Pinterest and Instagram and simply focus on experimenting with materials, concepts and words. Presented here is some of the student work. If you would like a Workshop, please contact me.
